Every sport runs
differently.
A water polo club schedules around pool time. A volleyball club lives on tournament weekends. A track squad is four squads sharing a track. Rostered models each sport the way the sport works, down to its positions, its season and how it competes.
Soccer
Goalkeeper · Defender · Midfielder · Forward
Soccer is the sport where the roster in your hand is not the roster that counts. The association issues the passes, prints the official list and checks it at the match, and the age boundary those lists are built on moved this season. What a club runs day to day sits alongside that, and has to agree with it.
Basketball
Point Guard · Shooting Guard · Small Forward · Power Forward
A great many basketball players spend one winter in two worlds, a school team and a club team, and the two do not agree about something as ordinary as the number on a jersey. That is the shape of basketball administration: the same child, the same season, two sets of rules that each think they are the rules.
Volleyball
Setter · Outside Hitter · Middle Blocker · Opposite
Volleyball runs on a written list of names and numbers, handed to the second referee before the game starts. Everything administrative in this sport points at that piece of paper, and the rules governing what may be written on it are different in club and high school, and one of them changes on a date already published.
Water Polo
Goalkeeper · Field Player · Driver · Wing
Water polo clubs run on pool time, which is scarce, shared and moves. Everything administrative follows from that constraint.
Cross Country
Cross country is the sport where who turns up IS the result. Five runners score, two more can displace, and the team with the lowest total wins, so an absence on Saturday morning is not a gap in a lineup, it is a different number at the bottom of the page.
Track & Field
Sprinter · Distance Runner · Jumper · Thrower
Track and field is several sports sharing one squad and one bus. The thing that binds them together administratively is a number: how many events each athlete has entered, against a limit that is national until your state decides otherwise.
Flag Football
Quarterback · Receiver · Running Back · Center
Flag football is the one sport we support whose rule book is being written while the season runs. The federation published its first one for high schools in 2025, states are sanctioning it a few at a time, and most of the country still plays it under a national club program instead. So the first question a new club has is not how to run a season, it is whose season they are running.
Ice Hockey
Center · Wing · Defense · Goalie
Hockey is the sport where the age group is not a date you cross but a year you were born in, and where the whole calendar is downstream of somebody else owning the building. Those two facts explain most of what is strange about running a youth hockey program.
Wrestling
Wrestling asks a program to keep a running answer to one question: which weight class is this wrestler eligible for, today. It is not a fact you record once. It is a number somebody else established before the season, moving on a schedule, checked against paperwork tied to each meet, for every wrestler on the roster at the same time.
Swimming
Freestyle · Backstroke · Breaststroke · Butterfly
Swimming asks a coach to hold a running total for every swimmer on the team, against a cap they cannot exceed, while the thing being counted keeps changing. A dual-meet lineup is a tactical answer to the other team’s lineup, so it is written late and moves, and every move redistributes the count.
Football
Quarterback · Running Back · Wide Receiver · Tight End
Football plays about ten games, once a week, and that arithmetic runs the whole sport. One date is a tenth of the season, so a date that goes unfilled is a week nobody played. Underneath it, a high school player’s quarters accumulate against a limit their state sets, over a week their state defines, and somebody keeps that count by hand.
Tennis
Singles · Doubles
Tennis is the sport where the roster is the rule. A high school lineup is an order rather than a list, it has to run from strongest to weakest, and whether today’s order is legal depends on what the order was at the last match. Almost nothing else a coach does in this sport is as consequential as getting that sequence right.
Softball
Pitcher · Catcher · First Base · Second Base
Softball is the sport where the most useful thing we can tell you is that nobody is required to tell you. The federation that runs high school sport mandates a pitching workload policy for baseball and requires nothing of the kind for softball, so the answer to how much your pitcher may throw depends on whether your state decided to have one.
